5 Fun Dog Exercises to Keep your Dog Active

If you have enrolled your dog in dog training, or if you have been attempting some dog training on your own, you may find that your dog is too wound up with energy to sit still and give you his full attention. Every dog, especially a dog that you are trying to train, will benefit from exercise to keep the dog active, healthy and attentive.

    1. Take Your Dog on a Hike

A great way to give your dog exercise is to take him on a hike with you. Your dog will love the opportunity to go on a hike along a trail with you. Your dog will absolutely love the change in scenery, including the new plants, trees and especially the new wildlife. Be sure to apply an insect repellent with DEET, and check your dog for ticks after a hike. Also, be sure to keep your dog leashed if it is required in your area.

    1. Take Your Dog on a Jog or Run Around the Neighborhood

There are few things that your dog will like more than jogging or running with you. Think about all the times your dog has tried to take off while you are on walks together. A run around the same loop that you take him every day on his walks will seem new and exciting to him if you pick up the pace. Go for a morning jog or run to get his heart rate up, and he will thank you all day by being noticeably calmer. Be sure to give him a drink of your water if he gets thirsty.

    1. Take Your Dog for a Swim

Most dogs love jumping in the water with you to swim if you hop in the pool or in the lake. Next time you go swimming or for a picnic by the lake, find a stick and play fetch in the water with your dog. This exercise is especially beneficial for older dogs that might be suffering from arthritis since it is a low-impact exercise. It may be a low-impact exercise, but your dog will reap the benefits that the endurance-strengthening and muscle-working exercise provides.

    1. Play Frisbee

This one is no surprise. Almost every dog jumps at the opportunity to get his mouth on a Frisbee. Start a game of Frisbee with your dog in the back yard or bring the Frisbee on your next outing and get your friends and family to play along with you and your dog. Your dog will revel in the attention that he receives when playing with you or with a group.

    1. Take Your Dog to the Dog Park

Take your dog to the dog park and let the other dogs exercise your dog! Your dog will enjoy spending time with other dogs, and they will provide him with a workout that might make you tired just watching. Your dog will appreciate the off-leash play time and the interaction with friends of his own kind.
